Union City Athletics Update 3/14/20
Randolph Eastern School Corporation will be shut down from March 16th through April 12th, with an anticipated school start date of April 13, 2020.
What does this mean for Athletics here at Union City JR/SR High School.
• All practices and athletic events will be cancelled through April 13, 2020.
• No athletic facilities on Union City's campus will be open during this time, this includes: gym, weight room, ball
fields and track. Students and coaches will not be able to conduct any type of workouts or practices while
Randolph Eastern School Corporation is shut down.
• Union City JR/SR High School coaches should not organize any type of off-campus team workouts, where a
coach and team members are practicing together.
The IHSAA issued a press release stating that the spring athletic season state tournaments are still going to operate at this time, but they did mention IHSAA Eligibility Rules will still be enforced as it pertains to IHSAA BY-Law 9:14, athletes needing 10 pre-participation practices before competing.
Future dates that Union City JR/SR High school coaches and athletes can prepare for at this time.
• First practice - April 13, 2020
• First athletic events can be conducted - April 27, 2020
Another By-Law to keep in mind is IHSAA By-Law 15-1 Participation rule:
a. Participation by a student in any organized non-school sports competition during Authorized Contest Season, or at any time prior to the conclusion of the student’s participation in the IHSAA Tournament Series, in that sport shall cause such students to become ineligible for their School team in that sport for a period not to exceed Three hundred Sixty-five (365) days as determined by the Commissioner, unless an outstanding student-athlete waiver for said competition is approved by the coach, principal and the IHSAA office and is on file in the principal’s office. A maximum of Two (2) waivers may be granted during a Contest Season. (waivers are only good for individual sports: track, tennis and golf)
This situation will continue to develop and I will do my best to keep you all informed. We are in uncharted territory and we will control what we can control. As I have said to many people, "it is how you react to situations that people will remember". Coaches let's stay positive with our athletes and once I get more information about how the spring sports season will play out, I will let you all know. No reason to panic or speculate about anything at this point. We will take it one day at a time!
Thanks for all coaches and athletes what you do for Union City and don't hesitate to call, email or text me anytime. I really do appreciate all the coaches and athletes here at Union City that are such a big part of our school corporation. Stay safe and healthy during this time.
